Coach Training
Coaches are trained to listen, observe, and customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach's job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity the client already has.
If you are new to the coaching profession, the International Coach Federation recommends the following three step process before you begin your coaching practice:
1. Hire a Coach
To truly gain full knowledge and understanding of the coach-client relationship, begin your journey as a client. This step will provide valuable insight into the coaching relationship and prepare you for a meaningful relationship with your clients. Additionally, consulting a coach can help you to determine whether coaching is the right profession for you.
To locate a coach, visit the ICF's Coach Referral Service (CRS) or search for an ICF member.
2. Attend a Coach Training Program
The ICF recommends that you complete an ICF-approved coach training program before beginning your practice. Formal training will prepare you for the rewards and challenges of the coaching profession. Programs approved by the ICF have demonstrated their commitment to teaching the ICF Core Competencies and the ICF Code of Ethics.
For a list of ICF-approved programs, please visit the ICF's Training Program Search Service (TPSS).
3. Join the International Coach Federation
Associations bind professions and professionals together: lawyers and doctors and engineers, architects, psychologists, public relations practitioners and financial planners, realtors, trainers, consultants and coaches. The true professional is a member of his or her professional organization. By maintaining membership in ICF, coaches inform others that they are part of an influential voice that is shaping the future of coaching around the globe. ICF membership will help you succeed.
